Discussion Groups meet once or twice a month in the homes of members to discuss topics or films. Meetings are educational and usually last about 2 hours. They give women from around the world a chance to learn about each other’s culture. Discussions take place in the language of the group (English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish). The participants choose various topics of general interest. Some English groups discuss international films.

Members should be fluent enough in the language of the group to enable them to take part in the discussions. High intermediate or advanced English is needed. Children are not included.

The Fun & Games group is intended for women who cannot attend daytime groups. It’ll involve casual conversation around a variety of activities at members’ homes and out around Ann Arbor, such as Board Game Night, Wardrobe Exchange, Lawn Games, Attending the Summer Festival together, etc.

Topic Groups (English – Advanced)

Discussion Group 1st and 3rd Wednesday 10:00 to 12:00

The Wednesday morning Discussion Group members have a lot of fun. We are flexible in choosing topics, which range from recipes to economics to the weekend activities we enjoy. We meet in homes but also take trips and go out to lunch.

Topic Group: 1st and 3rd Wednesday, 1:00-3:00

We strive for diversity, so we accept only three women from the same country. We meet and discuss topics suggested by our members. Everyone takes a turn speaking. It is very informal and fun. We take one field trip each year and meet for lunch at a restaurant in May. We meet in the homes of our members. Those who cannot host, can help provide refreshments. You do not need to attend every meeting, but we hope you can come to most of them.

Topic Group: 2nd and 4th Friday, 8:00-10:00 (PM)

The English Discussion Group is a group of fun women. We meet twice/month, the second and forth Friday, 8-10 pm. We get together to exchange stories and have a nice night out at the end of the week. We try to have topics related to our countries or personal experience, for example: Lost & Found (Friends or things you lost and/or found), gift giving etiquette in your country, etc.

Fun & Games : 3rd Wednesday of each month @ 6:30 PM

This group is intended for women who cannot attend daytime groups. It’ll involve casual conversation around a variety of activities at members’ homes and out around Ann Arbor, such as Board Game Night, Wardrobe Exchange, Lawn Games, Attending the Summer Festival together, etc.

Film Groups (English – Advanced)

Film: 1st and 3rd Thursday, 7:30-10:00 (PM)

Our diverse group (of women from 15 different countries) meets in members’ homes. We enjoy watching international movies that have been recommended by members. Each alternate meeting we discuss a topic relevant to the movie we have just watched. Our long traditions include several special events, such as a Mid-August lunch, Red Carpet Soiree, and White Elephant Sale.

Film: 2nd and 4th Friday, 12:30-4:00

We meet at member’s homes every other Friday afternoon at 12:30 PM. We have a sign-up sheet for members to supply light refreshments. Our films begin promptly at 1 PM followed by a discussion that generally lasts until 4 PM. All films are either in spoken English or English subtitles. We view a variety of films from around the world. We do not view films with graphic violence, however some films have contained war-related bloodshed.

Matinee Movie Group

The Matinee Movie Group meets the third Tuesday afternoon each month. We go see an afternoon movie together at 1.) the Michigan or State Street Theatre in downtown Ann Arbor, 2.) Rave Theatre on Carpenter Road in Ypsilanti OR 3.) a member’s home. We also have a healthy, vegetarian meal together, either in a restaurant or as a potluck, and discuss the movie. We focus on documentaries, foreign films and films about women and women’s issues, here in the United States and around the world. We will meet 15 minutes before the movie is to begin in the lobby of the theatre, or in a member’s home. The time for meeting each month will depend on when the movie is to begin, but we are aiming for early to mid afternoon movie showings. Members will be informed via email which movie we will be seeing and where and when we will be meeting the Friday BEFORE our Tuesday gathering.

Language Groups (Language Level – Advanced)

German: 1st and 3rd Monday, 1:00-3:00 (PM)

This group welcomes native and nonnative speakers to share their thoughts about topics of general interest and German and American culture. Members support each other to stay connected to their home country and to adjust and feel at home abroad. Everyone has a great opportunity to improve their knowledge of the German language

The Japanese Discussion Group

The Japanese Discussion Group is a place where Japanese speakers gather to talk about topics in Japanese. We have some long-time members, who have lived outside of Japan for years and want somewhere to practice their Japanese along with some who have just arrived in Ann Arbor and are tired of learning and speaking English :). Topics vary, some we have discussed in the past are: different election systems between US and Japan (we had this topic in 2012, when we had the election), how to overcome cold winters in Ann Arbor, outing ideas in and near Ann Arbor, gardening, secret to longevity/healthy lifestyle, and changing/evolving Japanese language. We come up with topics at our first meeting of the year. We also have a potluck twice a year: once before the holiday season and at the last meeting of the year in May.

Spanish -I: 2nd & 4th Tuesday, 1:00-3:00

We are a group of Spanish speakers, many of whom are native speakers from many different countries. However, the group has a number of members who are speakers of Spanish with varying abilities. We meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month from late September through late May or early June. We meet at different homes, socialize while we eat whatever the hostess has prepared as well as food contributions from other members. With few exceptions there is an announced topic of conversation for the last hour of the meeting.
