Martha began her long association with IN when in 1968 at the age of 21 she joined an English conversation group. Participation led to group leadership and eventually to Board membership as Discussion Group Chair. She and Barb wrote the first version of “Guidelines for Discussion Group Leaders” which continues to be an important document for those volunteers. After retiring from the University of Michigan in 2010, Martha assumed the IN presidency for three years making changes that greatly increased membership and shifted communication online, resulting in more frequent and timely communications at less cost to the organization. Having known Martha for 47 years myself, I’m thrilled to have a chance to highlight her achievements in IN as she spoke of the organization so enthusiastically over the years. Of her longtime involvement, Martha writes “It is all about teamwork and, through the years, I have been grateful to work side by side with so many competent women.”
