And here is my time-honored recipe for Gingerbread men and women:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
Blend until creamy:
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup dark molasses
- 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 teaspoons ground ginger
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
Add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture in three parts, adding 1/4 cup water with each part. Mix the dough together well.
Sprinkle a little flour on your cutting surface. Take a piece of the dough and roll it out flat. Use a cookie cutter to cut out the shapes. I usually do a combination of Gingerbread men and women. Decorate with raisins for eye, m&m candies for buttons etc. Place on a cookie sheet and bake for 8 minutes. Cool on a metal rack. Make icing with a paste of 1/4 cup powdered sugar, a few drops of water, and a few drops of red food coloring for the mouth. Draw the mouth on the cookie with a toothpick. Use white icing and other colored icings to finish decorating your cookies.
Makes about 16 Gingerbread men and women.
Warm regards to you and your family,
