Ann Arbor (nicknamed “Tree Town”) was founded in 1824 by John Allen and Elisha Rumsey who named the town after their two wives –each named Ann– and the many Burr oak trees that grew on the land that they had purchased. Since the town’s founding, Ann Arbor has remained faithful to its nickname. According to Wikipedia “the city contains more than 50,000 trees along its streets and an equal number in parks“.
One way to enjoy Tree Town is by joining one or both of International Neighbors’ two hiking groups that meet regularly to take advantage of our beautiful arbors and parks!
